Louis-Joseph Papineau
Louis-Joseph Papineau was born on October 7 1786 in Montreal. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for a country called Kent in 1809. The in he won to represent the Riding of Montreal West in the Assembly in 1814. In 1815 he was a speaker in the Assembly and he then he worked for the important office until 1837. He was then recognized leader of the patriotes. Louis-Joseph had political strength, and Lord Dalhousie had recognized that and offered him a seat on the Executive Council. Louis-Joseph had accepted the offer but he had resigned immediately because he did not like the fact that the British government had so much control over the political life of the colony.1835 to 1837 he had block many bills in Assembly having to do with the give money to the executive. The British had then ordered the governor Lord Gosford in March 1837, to pay then expenses of government from crown funds. When Louis-Joseph heard about this he was very angry. On October 23rd 1837, meeting of patriotes was help at St. Charles during the rebellion. Louis-Joseph and others were all the sudden arrested. Louis-Joseph then ran away to Untied states and watched the rebellion from a safe place. In 1839 Louis-Joseph went to Paris and stayed there until the general amnesty allowed him to return back. But when he came back in 1848 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the United Province of Canada and remained their until 1854 when her retired. Louis-Joseph Papineau died on September 23rd 1871.
